Young History Workshop

Based in ten schools across London, Young History Workshop (YHW) brought school students, teachers and academic historians to work together on a diverse array of projects around the theme of ‘them and us’. YHW aimed to inspire young people with a love of history, to encourage them to think critically and reflexively about their own relationships to the past and to facilitate collaborations between schools, universities and the heritage sector.

The project connected two early-career historians to each school, working with the teacher to design and implement schemes of work that draw on their own research and which can be pursued in extra-curricular history clubs. During the course of the project, the historians acted as mentors by attending sessions, contributing to discussion boards and accompanying pupils on trips to local heritage sites.

So far YHW was run as a pilot project between September 2010 and March 2011 and culminated in a full day of presentations by students and activities at the Museum of London, Docklands. Young History Workshop is a project run by the Raphael Samuel History Centre in association with the Historical Association and funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Trust.
