Young History Workshop
Young History Workshop (YHW) is an innovative outreach scheme which the Centre intends to pilot from May 2010. The culmination of the scheme will be an informal one-day learning event in March 2011 attended by school students, teachers, academics, and representatives from the wider heritage, educational and cultural communities. The event will act as forum for discussion and debate. Between 100 and 250 key stage 3 and 4 students will take to the stage to offer short presentations on an aspect of London history relating to the broad theme of ‘Them and Us’. Whether a talk, drama or film short, each presentation will be researched and written by the students during in-school workshop sessions facilitated by a project worker with the support of a historian ‘mentor’ from a local higher education institution, heritage centre or archive. To get your school involved, contact the Centre team by emailing our administrator Katy Pettit.
The aims of Young History Workshop:
- to get students across the ability range and from diverse backgrounds engaged in history and heritage outside the classroom
- to help young people learn and develop as historians through a process of structure and support
- to raise awareness among Years 10 to 13 of the relevance of history to the world of work
- to demystify the university applications process and the day-to-day realities of higher education
- to build bridges between different schools and communities through a shared enthusiasm for history
- to establish a model framework to inspire, encourage and inform similar events across the UK
