The Adventurers History Club
The Adventurers is a history club for “hard-to-reach” young people aged 16 to 20 run by Michelle Johansen of the Centre team. The club aims to:
- Remove the barriers which might prevent young people from visiting heritage sites in their spare time.
- Enable young people to gather, communicate and learn as a group on a regular basis.
- Encourage a spirit of adventure among young people.
- Increase young people’s interest in and knowledge of the history of London.
The club is supported by a grant from the Gareth Butler History Trust with additional support from the Bishopsgate Foundation’s small grants scheme. Members take part in supervised monthly trips to museums, cultural and heritage sites in London. During the trips, they record their findings in research notebooks. Afterwards, they enjoy a meal together at which they are able to bond as a group by informally sharing their research findings. Members are encouraged to play an active part in the Adventurers’ administration and decision-making processes, e.g. by attending planning meetings. For more information, contact the Centre.
