The Adventurers

Inspired by the archive and museum visits and research activities they enjoyed during ‘Up the Manor!’ in the autumn of 2008 a group of Year 11 students from George Mitchell School began meeting with the Centre team to discuss forming a history club for 16-18 year olds. The Adventurers was born out of these discussions. Everything about this scheme was decided by the students: they thought of the name, they chose to hold monthly meetings and they suggested which heritage sites and museums they would like to visit. In 2009, the Gareth Butler History Trust generously agreed to fund the Adventurers’ first year of activities.
The Adventurers provisional programme for 2009-10 includes a canal boat trip through London on a restored 1930s longboat to discover the changing role of the city’s waterways during the twentieth century; a visit to the Globe Theatre to learn about London’s cultural life around the turn of the seventeenth century; and a visit to the Bishopsgate Institute to examine the Institute’s vast collection of London maps and guidebooks to find out how outsiders and visitors have viewed the Metropolis since c.1800. Watch this space for updates and reports.
The ‘Up the Manor!’ tour of the Emirates stadium and visit to Arsenal FC Museum was a highlight for many of the project participants.

The Adventurers cannot accommodate new members at present. However, in the future we hope to roll the concept out across London so that more young historians from hard-to-reach communities might have the opportunity to explore and discover the city’s rich heritage and culture. For more information, contact the Centre. Offers of support or suggestions for activities for future years are especially welcome from heritage centres and archives in the London area.
